Summer learning program’s donation drive total surpasses previous years

(SAVANNAH, GA) Horizons Savannah’s annual Giving Day concluded with a total of $92,327 raised in support of the local program, marking the organization’s second year in a row surpassing the previous year’s donation total. While this event is typically held for one day, Horizons programs adapted their tactics in response to COVID-19, working with businesses to provide online incentives and give-back opportunities for an entire month. Horizons Savannah partnered with several businesses, including Kendra Scott, Papa Murphy’s and Jason’s Deli

“We are so grateful to every single person in our community who rallied in support of our programs,” said Christy Edwards, Executive Director of Horizons Savannah. “To achieve this level of success is a testament to how much Savannah truly cares about its kids.”

All donations to Horizons Savannah will directly aid its mission to close the opportunity gap for under resourced students in Kindergarten through 12th-grade by minimizing the well-documented summer learning loss. In Chatham County and the greater Savannah area alone, the program serves over 300 participants and has had an 89 percent student retention rate from summer to summer.

This year specifically, the funds from Giving Day will be used to ensure that students enrolled in the Horizons Savannah summer program have access to the technology and tools necessary to participate virtually.

“Our Horizons @ Home program has been a great success so far,” said Edwards. “Our teachers are so creative and it’s been a  joyful experience for our students.”

According to Horizons National, 97 percent of Horizons high school students graduate on time and 91 percent go on to college. Students also typically advance six to eight weeks in reading and math skills during one summer of the program.
